Jac Fitz-enz article, “From Metrics to Intelligence,” gives detailed information on three different viewpoints that Human Resource professionals should grasp. First, Human Resources are currently in a state of “evolution,” and when it comes down to it plain metrics are not enough for the new HR world. Second, due to the increased technology advances, new technology tools have been developed to maneuver complex business capital. Third, the goal of HR measurement is to generate business value. Human Resource has evolved tremendously in the last 50 years. Jac Fitz-enz points out in his article the viewpoint of an HR professional back in 1978, “ We put people in Personnel where they can’t hurt anyone.” Which was generally referenced to senior level executive who took over the HR function, because they had outgrown their “usefulness,” and were on the brink of retirement. However, that type of viewpoint in no longer and accurate description of today’s HR professionals. In contrast, Human Resources Management has evolved to a more complex profession and career path for professionals interested in Human Resources. The growth of the profession had sprouted a gradual integration of metrics, codes of conducts, and an evolving general operating model. The business core of every business is formed of three different forms of capital: Structural - encompasses the physical items that are owned by a company. Relational - information and connections that company employees have with outside customer, clients, or vendors. Human – are the people of the business. For the most favorable value and outcomes comes form how the three capitals interact. For this to occur HR professionals must utilize the most advanced technology tools. Technology has developed to a point where Human resources professionals use it to make better business decisions.
