In the novel Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, the two main characters, Ralph and Jack, have various similarities and differences. There is a particular emphasis concentrated on how each boy governs society. Ralph is characterized differently as a leader than Jack. Also, Ralph has different morals and perspectives than Jack. Even though both boys are naturally identified as leaders early on in the novel, their personalities are what set them apart. The big differences between Ralph and Jack are centered around the way they both become leaders, their values, and the ways in which they govern. From the way Ralph acts I would guess that Ralph has always cared for others. When Jack was making fun of Piggy and called him fat, Ralph stood up for Piggy and told Jack that fatty was not Piggy’s name (27). Even though Piggy had told Ralph not to tell anyone else his other nickname which was “Piggy”, Ralph accidentally mentioned it in front of everyone. Piggy is a good friend of Ralph, even though Ralph doesn’t seem to pay that much attention to Piggy he still cares for him. “ ‘I got the conch!’ said Piggy indignantly. ‘Ralph - they ought to shut up, oughtn’t they?’ (118)“ Ralph stood up for Piggy once again when Piggy had the conch, which by rules no one else should be speaking, and Ralph told everyone to be quiet and listen to Piggy who had the conch. Jack who isn’t so nice to everyone acts very differently than Ralph. As an example, When a boy who was standing in Jacks line fell to the ground on his face, He didn’t even seem to care and just left him to faint (26). Jack is sometimes very rude and arrogant. He was disobeying the rules that were made by Ralph, the leader, and telling people to shut up because they were on top of the mountain and the conch didn’t work up there (58).
