In this interview, I took concepts that I learned from units four and seven. I did not get a chance to ask questions concerning units eight and nine because of time constraints. In unit four, I noticed specific strategies to articulating and maintaining a vision. So, I asked Peggy if she had any steps of strategic planning to articulate a vision. She said, “Developing a concept that is easy to understand. Consider individual strengths to form a planning team.” In the book, a system called Appreciative Inquiry uses a similar approach. At the bottom of page 199, the author mentions four words starting with the letter D: discovery, design, dream, and destiny. Peggy is mostly talking about the first D, discovery. She answered, “Working in a group who possesses the same ideals and has the same goals makes for a more effective outcome. Not everyone has the same vision. Lack of order and communication may lead to unneeded compromising.” I was wondering if this would lead into the five dysfunctions of a team as that is in the next unit. An advantage she mentions is if a team has the same ideals and goals helps the group work more effectively. Her mission as a leader is to make sure that her followers or coworkers are on the same page because if they are not then it leads to lack of order and communication making the team fall apart. On page 252, it talks about how a team is when there is a lack of commitment. A team who lacks commitment creates uncertainty about the direction and priorities that the leader wants to achieve. It also doesn’t allow the team to build a cause on common ground. This relates closely to the reading American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center because in this story the police and firefighters began to show signs of lacking commitment to the overall goal. They decided that status was more important than rescuing people. This lead to more deaths on both sides because they were not acting as a team.
