Learned Helplessness is “a condition in which a person suffers from a sense of powerlessness, arising from a traumatic event or persistent failure to succeed. It is thought to be one of the underlying causes of depression.” Take a couple in a toxic relationship for example. The man was verbally abusive, no matter what she did he would always chastise and curse at her. This represents Learned Helplessness perfectly. Because the outcome would always be the same no matter what the circumstance. A Dependent Variable is what we can change where the Independent Variable is what we are given and can’t change. This meaning that throughout the investigation period they would still be getting paid by the state that they lived and committed the crime in. These officers were being reinforced and not punished. If the officers were being punished they would have been fired and prosecuted not rewarded by getting to stay home and make free money after wrongly shooting someone. There was another officer associated with the shooting but he did not fire his weapon. This officer was fired from his job. This officer was being punished, but it was not right. He was receiving the punishment that the other officers should have received. Wherelse they were receiving the reinforcement tactics that should have been used against him. This is becoming a problem with our society today, the officers in which are committing these crimes are not being punished, they are being none the less rewarded. A paid leave? This is not punishment, being fired isn’t enough punishment. These people are murders and they need to be prosecuted. The rate of Police brutality and violence on and against black men has been steadily rising in the present day. In the last years there has been many cases where a man has been murdered by the police and nothing has been done about it. The cops get put on administrative leave and continue to get paid. They go to court but the case gets dropped or they get a petty simple charge
