This study has been approached from three varied learning lenses namely (1) social constructivism, (2) Value-based learning and (3) Discovery Learning using Inquiry-based approach to study how these learning lenses would influence the type of instructional design used to teach a subject. Through this lesson study it is our hope that what has been written of the learning episode through the three different lenses fits the bill of providing insights to educators that one’s approach towards teaching and learning in the classroom is very much influenced by one’s choice of learning lens. Same experience, different observations, different interpretations. These different views were the results of using three different learning lenses mentioned above. A teacher who puts on the social constructivism lens would be looking out for elements of collaborative learning and consider having groupwork activities to aid in the learning process, a teacher with the Value based learning lens would be looking out for what is of value to learning and thus design activities based on authentic settings that mirror actual situations, and a teacher who dons the discovery learning lens would be searching for elements of problem solving learning and creates lessons that incorporate inquiry-related and solutions finding activities. Teachers as the gatekeeper of knowledge in the classroom has the responsibility of ensuring that the best lens that suits them as the choice of lens will greatly impact on the students’ learning, the future of tomorrow’s generation.
