“Leave it to the Beaver” Vs. “Modern Family”
The era of 1950-60’s is a unique era in American History and those years are still considered as a benchmark for evaluating family values. During that period, television programming was struggling and emerging as a cultural force and had a huge impact on society. “Leave it to Beaver” is one of the most popular TV shows of that time which may be perceived as old school in comparison to the modern time TV show “The Modern Family”. Although both the shows represent how the families should function and how everyone comes together for a happy resolution towards the end, it is the way they handle the issues in their own distinctive style which makes them diverse from each other. Due to Claire staying at a home and being much involved in setting the ground rules she seems to be head of the family. Gloria and Jay portray a role of a gold digger and sugar daddy but that’s not the case, they are genuinely happy with each other despite the age difference and ethnic background. Once again Jay doesn’t seem to be the head of the family, Gloria much like Claire is a woman who likes to be in charge of every situation. She appears to be equal and sometimes superior to Jay rather being a subordinate as it was to be in the 50’s TV shows. Cam is more on a feminist side and bears a sensitive nature like women, primarily he takes care of their adoptive child (Lily), and his staying at home position associated him with a role of the mother though biologically he is a male while Mitchell is a bread earner of this family.
In “Leave it to Beaver” the family is happy all the time; life is run by strict social customs. Parents try not to fight in front of the children, where kids refer to their parents as Sir or Ma'am and would never talk back. Parents show attempts to teach morals and importance of honesty and truth to their children. On one hand there are values of leave it to beaver where the goal is to teach valuable lessons in life; drawback at the same time is everyone puts their face masks to adhere the social customs, which eventually suppresses your feelings leading to bad things.
