Take good care of your catheter to keep it working properly and to prevent problems.
HOW TO WEAR YOUR CATHETER

Attach your catheter to your leg with adhesive tape or a leg strap. Make sure it is not too tight. If you use tape, remove any bits of tape that are already on the catheter.
HOW TO WEAR A DRAINAGE BAG

You should have:

A large overnight bag.

A small leg bag.

Overnight Bag

You may wear the overnight bag at any time. Always keep the bag below the level of your bladder but off the floor. When you sleep, put a clean plastic bag in a wastebasket. Then hang the bag inside the wastebasket.

Never wear the leg bag at night. Always wear the leg bag below your knee. Keep the leg bag secure with

Shower every day. Do not take baths.

Apply creams, lotions, or ointments to your genital area only as told by your doctor.

Do not use powders, sprays, or lotions on your genital area.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DRAINAGE BAGS

Empty your drainage bag when it is ⅓–½ full or at least 2–3 times a day.

Emptying a Drainage Bag

Supplies Needed

Rubbing alcohol.

Gauze pad or cotton ball.

Adhesive tape or a leg strap.

Steps

Wash your hands with soap and water.

Separate (detach) the bag from your leg.

Hold the bag over the toilet or a clean container. Keep the bag below your hips and bladder. This stops pee (urine) from going back into the tube.

Open the pour spout at the bottom of the bag.

Empty the pee into the toilet or container. Do not let the pour spout touch any surface.

Put rubbing alcohol on a gauze pad or cotton ball.

Use the gauze pad or cotton ball to clean the pour spout.

Close the pour spout.

Attach the bag to your leg with adhesive tape or a leg strap.

Wash your hands.
