The universal concept of Marriage is the commitment between two individuals. What the commitment brings about, is varies from culture to culture. In modern American society, marriage is a commitment of loyalty and love. It is an official contract binding two people together providing them with benefits of matrimony such as hospital visitation rights and tax breaks. Now the question plaguing Americans today is whether or not the rights to these benefits and commitments should apply to people of the same sex. The answer is simply, why not? Some argue that raising children in a marriage with two fathers or with two mothers breaks down family values. It has also been suggested that raising a child in the same-sex marriage could potentially make that child homosexual. Neither of these arguments is valid. Many homosexual couples have already adopted and raised children, and these children turned out as perfectly healthy, normal, heterosexual children. Having children being taken out of the foster care and being raised by a pair of loving and supportive parents could never be detrimental to society. The most important reason for raising children is to teach them to become happy and productive members of society by providing them with a loving environment, where they can feel safe to express who they really are and feel protected from both judgment and abuse. Also having two loving parents that can support and love their child and that is much more important than arguing about what gender their parents supposed to be. Furthermore, if homosexual couples were to adopt children, it would provide those foster children with a new home and loving parents. According to Find Law, “As of this last decade, an estimated 6 to 14 million children have a gay or lesbian parent. Many people would disagree with that statement. Some people that oppose same-sex marriage would source the Bible, which says marriage is between a man and a woman. They argue that homosexuals cannot be married because God would not allow it. The Bible also says, however, that the sacred union of marriage should not be severed by divorce. By following the same line of reasoning that same-sex marriage should be illegal because it is not religiously correct would also lead to one to believe that heterosexual divorce should be illegal. According to Masci “Jesus himself had nothing to say about homosexuality, but he is very clear on divorce should be illegal. And what I don’t understand is why homosexual people are the only people in America who have to follow the biblical law" (Masci). To choose which laws of the Bible should be enforced and which shouldn’t defeat the purpose of referencing the Holy Book. Except if heterosexuals are willing to give up the right to divorce, same-sex marriage should be legal. Furthermore, religion should have no effect upon government affairs. This nation calls for a separation of church and state, and to allow religion to be deciding factor in a federal law is not only unethical but unconstitutional.
