Protection for Prostitute
Prostitution is a word that comes with a bad connotation. When someone hears this word, he or she thinks of a dirty woman selling herself on the street corner. When someone thinks about prostitution, he or she passes judgment on the men and women who participate. However, they do not think about the danger that prostitutes, particularly women prostitutes, considering 80% of them are women, might face. Prostitution is illegal in almost every state America, and this means many women do not get the protection they need; instead they are thrown in jail at alarming rates. Many women are forced or tricked into prostitution at the age of 14 or even younger. Then, they become indebted to a pimp who is the only source of food and housing and takes a large portion of their only source of income. If the government were to legalize prostitution they could make strict laws about how old someone must be to be a prostitute, such as 18 or 21. While, many people might think, even with strict laws, young girls will continue to be forced into prostitution; however, if legalized, the government could regulate the age and enforce strict age laws. For example, if someone is caught participating in prostitution under age or forcing someone under age into prostitution he or she could now face many years in jail and heavy fines, just for that. Many prostitutes may be unaware that they are infected, and they are spreading the disease in large numbers, as a prostitute sees on average as many as 300 clients a year. Many prostitutes have contracted the HIV virus: up to 50% around the world. If prostitution were to be made legal in licensed brothels, weekly STD testing could be required of the prostitutes working, and the law could require the clients to be tested before entering the brothel. The law could also require prostitutes, practicing in the brothels, to use protection from STDs. While some might say, fewer men will be interested if forced to go through testing and then forced to wear protection thus cutting down on business for the brothel. However, the health of an individual is more important than the pleasure of another. Requiring testing and protection could greatly cut down on the number of prostitutes and clients that could encounter a life threating STD, such as the HIV
