A movie came out in 2004 that could be classified as comedy and family fun, all rolled up in gloom and doom. Some might wonder how a movie could be those first two genres and that last one all at the same time. Well, Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events did just that. This movie is about three very bright, rich children who were orphaned at young ages after their parents died in a nasty fire. Soon after the event, a distant and odd cousin, named Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), agrees to take the children in as his own. Very quickly though the children see that Count Olaf is only after the large fortune that the children possess, and so begins their desperate attempts to rid themselves of the evil Count Olaf and his attempts to capture the children and steal their fortune. However,with smarts, faith, and the strength of familial love- all expressed through use of a narrator, dialect, and camera angles- the children are able to escape the icy clutches of Count Olaf ("Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events").

First, this movie’s very smart and inventive character is Violet Baudelaire, who is played by Emily Browning. Violet’s quick thinking and creative side saves the children on countless occasions. “In a world of abandoned items and discarded materials, Violet knew there was always something. Something she could fashion into nearly any device for nearly every occasion” ("Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) Movie Script | SS").
