In the novella, “Of Mice and Men”, you are introduced to the two main characters. Your first impression is about how these two interact and how they relate to each other, and how one looks out for the other. These two are named George and Lennie, and both of them have each other for whatever they need. This could also be referred to as a close friendship. Despite the fact that Lennie is mentally ill, he still has a sense of how George treats him. In “Mice and Men”, George understands, cares, and defends Lennie. I believe that George overall was a good friend, not because he was “forced” to take care of him, but because he did this out of heart, as a promise to Lennie’s Aunt Clara. Throughout the book, George shows qualities in which you could indicate that he is a very gracious friend to Lennie. George cares for Lennie, in a variety of ways. In the scene where George says, “Lennie was jus scairt, he didn’t know what to do. ” (Steinbeck 65), he is on his side all the time, because he comprehends Lennie's condition and his state of mind. He agrees with him, to show him how much he really is devoted to Lennie. By doing this, George creates a tight bond with him, giving Lennie the chance to feel that someone is concerned about him. “You don’t need to be scairt no more.” (Steinbeck 65), George later says. In this sense, George ended his life, mainly because he wanted it to be a peaceful death, rather than a violent one where he would be lynched or be in jail. George took Lennie’s life into consideration, and purposefully did this for the best of cause. He knew all that Lennie had done for him in the past was wholehearted, and he wanted to do the same. All he wanted for Lennie was utter tranquility in his life, knowing that he was mentally ill, and in these ways defending, understanding, and caring for
