This past week, I began to practice the Christian period known as Lent. Practicing Lent taught me that observant Catholics are open minded because abstinence from meat and Netflix was healthy, thinking about my loved-one made me a more positive person, and charity and service made me mindful of others. As I abstained from watching netflix and fasted from eating any land meats on Friday, I realized this was a healthy choice. While I fasted on Friday, I also chose to refrain from eating fish or any form of meat. This allowed me to eat more healthy options like fruit and salad, making me more energized. While fasting on Friday, I thought of how my grandma loved eating all types of meat. I assumed if she performed this practice it would be difficult for her due to her fondness of meat. As I ate dinner and conversed with my family over the weekend, I thought of how happy and social she used to be. This made me want to be nicer and have a more positive attitude. During the following school week, I thought of how my grandma was efficient and productive doing her tasks. This helped me complete my homework and classwork more quickly and allowed me to power through each day much easier. Lastly, I reminisced about how she lived her life happily and generously before passing away. As I reflected on this, I realized I should not dwell on the little things in life and instead prosper and thrive on the more positive things. Overall, thinking about my grandma made me a more positive person. This taught me that observant Catholics are closely connected to their spiritual deity. As I practiced Lent, I decided to give some gifts or money to the homeless. I proceeded to give ten dollars to a homeless man I found on the beach. When he gladly received the money and thanked me, it made me feel his happiness and I became more joyful myself. After walking to a park, I gave some food to an even less fortunate person. Due to this man’s appearance and lack of money, it made me think of how hard it must be for him. Finally, I gave a few dollars and some water to the third homeless person I came across. His cheerful reaction made me feel generous and appreciative for what I have. In the end, I became more mindful of the less fortunate and realized how privileged I am to have what I own.
