Leonardo Da Vinci was a Renaissance man with tremendous talent known for his contributions in literature, fine arts, mathematics, science, and inventory. Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, and died on May 2, 1519. Da Vinci was born in Tuscany which is in present-day Italy. His parents were Ser Piero and Caterina, but because Da Vinci was born out of wedlock, he was raised by his father and stepmother. Leonardo grew up in the home of his uncle and grandparents. Leonardo had an artistic ability which was noticeable from an early age, even though his formal education was limited, and around the age of fourteen, Leonardo began to apprentice under Andrea del Verrocchio. The Mona Lisa is a well-known classic, which is a painting of a seated woman. Possible identities of the women are Leonardo's mother, the princess of Naples, and a courtesan, or a wealthy Florentine silk merchant's wife. The Mona Lisa was commissioned by the Giocondo family. And it follows expectations of a Renaissance art piece due to the inclusion of perspective, and humanism. The Mona Lisa is famous today because from any angle the women seem to be looking at the viewer, this is called Silberblick in German. Leonardo never got to finish the painting due to his strive for perfection. The Vitruvian man is also another one of Leonardo's impressive achievements. This is a sketch of a nude man standing in two positions. This sketch shows how Leonardo studied proportion, and also how he wanted to connect humans to nature. The Vitruvian man wasn’t commissioned by anyone for Leonardo to draw. Vitruvian man follows Renaissance styles because it is very realistic and even though the man is drawn to show proportion he still has prominent features and the two different positions that the man stands in allows the man to have some movement.
