Lessons Of Odysseus Depicted In Homer's The Odyssey

The book The Odyssey there are many lessons and challenges that Odysseus faces. The three main ones are The Cattle of the Sun God, where he learns what goes around comes around, The Cyclops Polymorphus where he learns that he needs to be more humble his crew helped him fight the Cyclops but because he screamed out that he Odysseus had defeated the cyclops Poseidon got him into a lot of trouble, and he learned that he should stick to the task given. In The Cattle of the Sun God, Odysseus learns that what goes around come around because he and his men Odysseus crew begs to stop at the Island of the Sun God Helios because they were exhausted and needed rest. Odysseus tells his crew that they must not touch the heifers on the island. But a storm made them stay on the island much longer than expected and they ended up running out of wine and bread. Odysseus then asked the gods to help him and his crew the gods tell Odysseus to go into a deep sleep and he does. Eurylochus then betrays Odysseus by convincing the hungry crew to eat some of the heifers on the island which Odysseus told them specifically not to do. When Helios discovered that they had eaten his cattle he said, “O Father Zeus and gods bliss forever, punish Odysseus’ men!”(Homer 1012-1013) and since they had eaten Helios cattle which they had been warned not to all of them except Odysseus …show more content…
he goes to the island of the Lotus Eaters to take on water and some of his crew gets caught up in the very addictive flower that is native to the island. He warned them saying, “No one taste the lotus, or you will lose your hope of home.” (Homer 985). Some of his men get off task of going home and they taste the lotus flower and the men never even longed of going home. This just shows that if you get off task a lot of things could go wrong in the task that was set for
