I am both ecstatic and reluctant to recommend Malvolio for admission to Cornell University. Malvolio possesses both positive and negative characteristics that would certainly add to the university’s diverse student body, but I strongly recommend a thorough evaluation of his qualities because he, as his classmates assert, acts like a Puritan.

In the classroom, Malvolio tends to act stern during lectures, discussions, and presentations. Malvolio earns extremely high grades and evidently studies well for tests and quizzes. However, Malvolio does have qualities that may hinder his acceptance to prestigious universities. Writing this letter, I must demonstrate complete honesty regarding Malvolio’s behavior, so I want to stress these qualities and their impact on Homestead’s learning environment. Malvolio often behaves too seriously, and consequently has no sense of humor. Malvolio, though, exemplifies order and sobriety, and a student like him adds another perspective to class discussions. Currently, the classroom discussions consist of analysis of The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and perspective is a major theme; having his distinct point of view on society allows the whole class to gain insight to other views on topics such as balance and hope. Also, Malvolio has other great qualities, however limited, that serve him advantages essential to succeeding in life. Malvolio stubbornly keeps his sanity in all situations; his friend continually attempts to convince Malvolio of his insanity, yet Malvolio firmly insists that he is not insane.
