In the short story, The Sniper, written by Liam O’Flaherty is an effective short story that guides the reader through the theme of war. The author guides the reader’s journey through this theme by using a grasping climax through the story that has a great sense of suspense, an intriguing title that grasps the attention of the audience, and a twist to conclude the story. By using these techniques throughout The Sniper, the reader’s view and opinion is transformed on war and encouraged to believe in anti-war.

As previously discovered in the short story, there is two snipers, the Republican, and the Free Stater. The Free Stater was discovered by the Republicans as an informant gave information about the whereabouts of the Free Stater sniper. Both the Republican and the Free Stater fight one another until the Free Stater eventually kills the Republican. As the story continues, the sniper ends up trying to escape from the Republicans, however, he is intrigued to see the face of his victim. As he does this, the sniper is shocked to see his victim’s face and the theme of anti-war is clearly stated. “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face” (O’Flaherty). This highly impacts the reader as it becomes clear that in war you are unaware as to who you are killing in war. The victim could be a mother or father, a brother or sister, or anything else in between. O’Flaherty thoroughly impacts the reader with this plot twist and his theme of anti-war becomes quite
