Liberal Arts Education Research Paper

A liberal arts education is a term that can be characterized or defined in various ways. The term ‘liberal arts’ refers to academic subjects such as human resources, literature, philosophy, art, sociology, and psychology. The word ‘education’ refers to learning or receiving instruction on a certain subject, principally at a school or university. This means that together the term ‘liberal arts education’ is the study of an academic subject at a recognized school or university. A liberal arts education is beneficial and recommended to thrive in the twenty-first century. A liberal arts education allows students to take a variety of courses and explore a variety of career options.The Globe&Mail talks about general arts students when they say,   “Today’s B.A. is producing graduates who are well-rounded, creative, critical thinkers, graduates who can write persuasively, who can formulate arguments and defend their ideas in conversation, graduates who are socially engaged, socially responsible, and well equipped to navigate a rapidly changing, interconnected world.” (article online)

Employers are constantly looking for well-rounded, university graduates that have adequate skills including communication, time-management, and leadership. _____ states, “Liberal arts education is one of the most enduring and widely shared visions in American higher learning.”(Page 145) ____ is introducing that liberal arts students are necessary and recommended for many high level jobs and careers. On the contrary, Susan Adams from Forbes Magazine informs readers that, “One survey question asked hiring managers what degrees they preferred. Only 1.6% said liberal arts.” (Forbes article) These results suggest that it may be more difficult for liberal arts majors to get a job when compared to other university major students, such as business, engineering, or fine arts. It is important to realize though that the people surveyed may not have been informed on what a liberal arts education is. For example, _____ conducted a survey and the results were summarized as such, “Only 27 percent of parents, and even fewer high school students (14 percent), indicate that they are very familiar with a liberal arts education.”(page 3) With this in mind, one must ensure that the people surveyed are knowledgeable on what exactly a liberal arts education is before answering the survey.
