Life Affirming Choices Movie Analysis

The short film, Life Affirming Choices, made me think of things that I never thought of much before. Before taking a philosophy course, I did not think of Euthanasia, what suffering means or what love means. I have thought about what happens after death a few times in my life and was always afraid of the concept of not being able to exist anymore. I thought about death when I saw my grandmother’s sister go through stage four lung cancer. It made me sad to see her suffering and she could not speak or breathe. I thought about ways that her pain could be relieved and that God should take her so she does not have to suffer anymore. I was a young teenager at the time and this video reminded me of what she went through before she passed away. The short film made me think about my opinion a bit more on Euthanasia. I have not confirmed fully what my opinion is but, I think I am Pro-Euthanasia to an extent. I believe that a person who is sick should be euthanized if they are absolutely suffering and they ask for that pain to be taken away. Respecting their wishes, I feel is respecting their dignity. After watching the video, I was thinking if we do not work with the patient to find what is best for them, are we taking away their dignity? I believe Euthanasia by Omission is taking away the dignity of the person. A striking statistic from the video was that 82% of the people who were thinking about being euthanized believed that they may be abandoned or lose their dignity. In some exceptions, according to the Catholic view, it may be okay to kill and that we should never forgo caring for the sick person. Showing them love and surrounding them with others they love may influence the patients’s decision. They may want to stay or feel better knowing that they were loved by their family and be ready to be
