Life before Moondog
Alan was born on December 15,1921 as Albert James Freed. He was born to Charles S Freed and Maude Palmer in Windber, Pennsylvania with 2 other siblings. He liked music even in high school when he made a band called the Sultans of Swing and he played the trombone. He had a dream of becoming the leader of a band. That dream didn't come true but another one did and it started when he was drafted into World War ll and served as a DJ on the armed forces. But after a while he was detected with a bad ear infection called mastoiditis and was discharged. When he got back from war he went to a government job and married his first wife, Betty Lou Bean in 1942. In his job he took a broadcasting job and got on the radio.

On the Radio He was on a couple of small radio stations but on all was a hit. But after these small job he landed a bigger gig and moved to Akron but then to Cleveland after a law suit in the last station.

It was in Boston in an arena that sat 10,000 people and it sold out and 20,000 people came. Everyone wanted rock and roll, as Alan Freed Said ‘Rock and Roll is bigger than all of us’. It became a riot. The police wanted everyone to sit quietly and not scream but it was rock and roll they wanted to dance to the songs. Freed realized that u couldn't limit them and said, drunk, "I guess the Boston police doesn't want u kids to had any fun". Everything in hell came lose after that and even 3 people were arrested and Freed got faced with charges. But still continued playing on his radio show and concerts.
