In the end of John chapter three, the Pharisees began to investigate Jesus but before any problems could arise he flees from Judea and heads to Galilee. During his route he stops in the city of Samaria, this is significant because most Jews went around Samaria because they were considered unclean and dangerous. Jews wanted to remain clean so they would go around the territory of Samaria. Jews and Samaritans hated one another, they were in constant battle with one another. Regardless of their hatred for one another, Jesus knew he must go through Samaria, it was his divine necessity. This is significant because John helps to remind us the importance of the Spirit. Jesus had the Spirit without limit and the Spirit informed him he must pass through Samaria. Before the new system the Jews and Samaritans has different places of worship. The Samaritans didn’t have a temple to worship in, they worshiped at Mount Gerizim. The Jews believed in all the Old Testament where the temple in Jerusalem was the place to worship. They hated one another, and the Jews even destroyed Mount Gerizim. The Samaritan woman argues about the differences in their worship, she replies, “our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” The Jews and Samaritans never worshipped together, but in verse 21, Jesus answers the women that the time is coming where “neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.” The hour is coming when Jews and Samaritans will worship anywhere, we no longer need a temple or mountain in order to worship, we can worship wherever as long as we worship in Spirit and Truth.
