Perspective It’s hard to believe things without actually seeing it, especially when it sounds totally crazy! For example, a story about a guy surviving on a lifeboat with a tiger for 227 days! That’s pretty hard to believe! But knowing Pi and his background makes a story with a boat full of zoo animals seem quite more true, despite all of it’s craziness. First off, let’s not forget that Pi was the son of a zookeeper, who deals and learns about animals everyday! Plus Pi was a very religious boy. Throughout all of Pi’s conflicts in the story, God always provided for him and gave him hope, which, I believe, kept him alive. In the end, I believe Pi gave us a choice on what story we wanted to believe and leave it up to us to decide. I believe the animal story, not just because it’s a happy ending, but also because after looking into the details of the story, it sounded like it could actually happen. First off, we have to remember that Pi was a son of a zookeeper. He knew before the wreck that tigers are extremely dangerous and they need to have their boundaries. Both stories were happy endings because he didn’t die! On the other hand, in both stories all of his loved ones still died and people suffered. Animals and humans are the only difference in the stories. What makes animals on board so hard to believe? Pi Patel says, “You want a story that won’t surprise you. That will confirm what you already know. That won’t make you see higher or further or differently” (Martell 302). People don’t want to hear about things that go different from how they think. All everyone wants to think is what seems right. I believe Pi gave two stories for people to think and to learn about themselves. It’s just like faith.
