Hero’s Journey in Life of Pi The Hero’s Journey is a plot that many stories follow, including the book Life of Pi. The hero’s journey is a set of steps that the main character goes through. There are twelve steps which separate into three main sections or parts. These three sections are when the hero is still living the normal life, when the hero is on the journey, and when the hero reaches the end of the journey. The book Life of Pi begins when Pi is still living in India with his family. This is the first step of the hero’s journey, in which the hero is still living their ordinary life. A little ways into the book Pi finds out that his family will be moving to Canada. This is the problem or challenge that he is faced with as the hero. The next step is the sixth step and it is possibly the most important step in the story as the entire middle section of the book is this part. In this step Pi comes face to face with his adventure. He must endure challenges and test, meet new friends, and face enemies. Pi does all of this throughout his journey at sea. He passes tests like making it through storms, getting fresh water and food, and surviving the sharks. As for friends and enemies, I think that you could argue whether Richard Parker is friend or foe, but I think he was very important to Pi’s story. At one point Pi even says that “Without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today,” I think this shows how much Richard Parker really means to Pi (ch. 57). After many months the journey becomes too much for Pi and Richard Parker, and on the brink of death they reach the mysterious floating island. This is the step in which the hero is “resurrected” or in this case restored to health. They are then set back on their journey at
