The number one best-selling novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel tells the story of a young boy in India named Pi Patel. Pi and his family decide to sell their animals from the family zoo and transport them so they are able to begin a new life in Canada. While transporting the animals to their new homes the ship begins to sink luckily Pi is able to board one of the few accessible lifeboats. Unfortunately the lifeboat that Pi boarded is accompanied by a 250 pound Bengal tiger, an orange orangutan, a zebra and a hyena. Pi must find a way to survive in harmony with these animals while being stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Luckily Pi finally reaches a beach in Mexico after spending 227 days with very limited supplies while being isolated with Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger. Due to Pi's …show more content…
In the glimpses shown of Pi’s life after the raft we see that Pi has been able to maintain a unified self by bringing together many different elements of the society. In Pi’s early childhood he lacked a strong female figure. He only talks about two females in his life one of them is his mother, Gita and the other his auntie Rohini. Gita and Rohini are complete opposites when it comes to religion. Gita had no interest in religion and attempted to get Pi to focus on the scientific and mathematic way of life while his auntie Rohini believed in religion and wanted Pi to be involved with it. She was the first to introduce him to religion by bringing him to a Hindu temple when he was a baby "Mother carrying me, Auntie propelling her.
