Why are some novels considered feminist and others are not? Well, some novels are considered feminist because it shows feminism from the plot and characters. Feminism is defined as a social and political movement that have a common goal which is to achieve political, economic, personal, and social rights for women. Like Water for Chocolate, a novel by Laura Esquivel, is considered as a feminist novel because it focuses mostly on female characters that are facing complications during the Mexican Revolution. Two important female characters that support feminism in this novel are Mama Elena and Gertrudis. First of all, Mama Elena supports feminism in this novel from being independent. For example, “Gertrudis running through the field completely naked” (57). Gertrudis was free which gave her the benefits to do anything and it was running through the field naked. This shows how women have many choices and rights to do anything they want without asking permission from men or anybody. Later on, Gertrudis “was coming back happily married to Juan” (179). This quote states how much freedom Gertrudis had since she was able to marry the person who she truly loves and care about, unlike her half sister, Rosaura. Another reason why Gertrudis is a feminist character is because she’s brave and determined. For instance, “Next week Gertrudis was working in a brothel on the border” (58). This quote proves how men aren’t the only ones willing to take risks or chances. Gertrudis is considered brave because she had the guts to run off and become a prostitute. Furthermore, “She was a general in the revolutionary army” (178). This quote shows how women can also be in the army. Gertrudis becoming a general in the revolutionary army from being a prostitute proves feminism from a woman taking a man’s position in the army. Gertrudis made a huge impact in the novel from supporting feminism. The novel, Like Water for Chocolate is based on feminism which focuses on women who are struggling during the Mexican Revolution.
