In the novel Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, Tita is the youngest of the family. She wants to marry the love of her life, Pedro, but because of she is the youngest daughter her strict mother won’t let her marry due to the family tradition. So he then decides to marry her oldest sister, Rosaura, but claims it’s only to stay close to Tita. Mama Elena’s second daughter is very lustful so she leaves the family ranch they all live on, to live with a soldier of the revolution. While she’s gone Rosaura gives birth to her son that is delivered by Tita, she treats this nephew like her own son, so much that she is able to breastfeed him while Rosa is dry. Mama knowing how close Pedro and Tita were getting she makes Rosa’s family to move to San Antonio, TX, this really devestaded Tita. Not long after that news arrived that Roberto, her nephew, has died. Tita seeks help and while she’s getting help from an american Dr. Mama is injured by a rebel raid. The antagonist, Mama Elena is the complete opposite of what Tita wants in life. Since her mom is controlling her only outlet is food! She was probably like this because she lost her husband giving her an extreme sinister feeling, With her mother being like this she was only able to express herself through food, like at the wedding everyone was throwing up the cake filled with her tears. Also the dish she gives to Pedro shows her love and desire for him. This was one of the few ways she was able to make a name for herself because of the way her mom pretty much had her as a slave. Images of heat through the novel show all the ups and downs, you need to boil water several times before you get it perfect for hot chocolate.
