A tradition is a custom that is passed on from generation to generation. They are set for a happy cause to remember the value of family and friends. Traditions are supposed to be associated with pleasant and heartwarming sentiments. Therefore when a tradition affects someone negatively, the tradition should either be amended for the better or be abolished completely.
In the novel, Like Water for Chocolate, Tita is a victim of a horrid tradition that forbids her from marrying, so that she can take care of her mother until she dies. Mama Elena upholds the De La Garza family tradition where the youngest daughter must care for her mother till the day death comes and without any distractions, such as marriage. In this situation, their tradition needs to be changed so that everyone is happy and gets what they want. Traditions that I have observed over the course of my lifetime from my own culture were always pleasant, especially one that includes red eggs. Usually in a Chinese family, when a newborn baby reaches one month of age, that important day is celebrated with red eggs. The eggs are hard boiled and dyed with the lucky color red symbolizing prosperity and good fortune; and for some families even, each birthday after that will always be served with some red eggs. The red egg tradition does not have a damaging impact on anyone’s life and is even healthy for you. Another tradition that I have experienced is one that I created with my best friend, Eileen; our tradition is to go to Six Flags every year which we have maintained since middle school.
