In Liliana Heker’s “The Stolen Party,” Rosaura is invited to Luciana’s birthday party. However, the true intention of the birthday invite was truly surprising when it was revealed at the end of the party.
Before Rosaura leaves for the party, her mother says, “I don’t like you going. It’s a rich people’s party.” (P. 1) Her mother doesn’t want her daughter to go to the party because of the social class difference. However, Rosaura is very excited for this birthday party and neglects the social class difference, while being under the impression that she is Luciana’s friend from all the time they spent together. Rosaura’s mother was the maid for Luciana’s household and Rosaura and Luciana met through this exchange. Every day, Luciana and Rosaura would do their homework together while waiting for Rosaura’s mother to finish up. Throughout all this time, Rosaura believed that she has truly bonded with Luciana to create a friendship between them.

This was demonstrated when she was given money instead of a gift at the end of the party. All of Luciana’s “true friends” were given a gift, such as a yo-yo, but instead Rosaura received payment for all the work she has done at the party. This was to be expected since she was not a friend of Luciana, but as the daughter of the maid. It made perfect sense why Rosaura was indeed working at the party.
