Three years ago, I couldn't tell you who the secretary of state was, but just last March, I was quoting him in my debate cases. Competitive debate has drastically changed my life since sophomore year. It wasn't just learning how to write 20-page research papers or keeping up with current events, debate has opened my eyes to a new way of seeing the world. I've become more open-minded and willing to speak up for what I believe in. Although we pretended to pass bills in Congressional debate, or argue about theoretical worlds in Lincoln-Douglas debate, the importance of becoming politically involved and communicating effectively still stands. I’ve gained the confidence I need to handle challenges in my life, however unexpected. Often, I was forced to think critically under pressure and give extemporaneous speeches in a room full of strangers. The communication and problem-solving skills I developed will benefit me in any professional situations, including medicine. Rounding with the doctors at M. D. Anderson also granted me access to their weekly meetings. The oncologists had to present their case and defend their methods of treatment, while discussing possible future solutions. From the experience of countless debate tournaments, I’m no longer afraid of putting myself out there, even if I risk appearing foolish. There have been times when I had no idea what to say, yet went ahead and delivered 10-minute speeches or hit a counterargument I never considered, only to quickly come back with defenses.
