Lincoln Movie Historical Accuracy

In my opinion The movie Lincoln achieves its goal of portraying Abraham Lincoln as a noble and dutiful president. Unfortunately the film does this to the sacrifice of some historical accuracy and the portrayal of other characters. The major things I learned from this film is how Lincoln’s personal life was affected by his political life and vice versa. Regarding the passage of the 13th Amendment I never realized that Lincoln assigned his secretaries to do backdoor negotiating with lame-duck politicians. I think that overall Lincoln is an excellent movie that is for the most part historically accurate.
I think the scenes portrayed in Lincoln (Battle of Jenkins Ferry, No Man’s Land, The courtroom during the voting of the 13th Amendment, etc.) were masterfully done in terms of costumes and scenery. To

In fact I did not fully understand what lame-duck politicians were until I saw this movie. It makes sense though that he would go after their votes since they were so vulnerable. I think even though this method is a little devious it is also genius. I also did not know that Lincoln invited confederates to Washington to negotiate peace. I think this was a risky thing to do both politically and diplomatically. It was relieving when Lincoln ordered Ulysses S. Grant to keep the Confederates out of Washington D.C. because if they had been allowed in the voting for the 13th Amendment could have turned out very differently
I agree with the article “Fact Checking Lincoln” that many of the characters are not portrayed properly. As the article states most of the characters are either “comical, quirky, weak-kneed, or pathetically self-interested”. While doing this makes for a good movie it also creates one dimensional characters. Since the movie is titled Lincoln and not the 13th Amendment I think it is alright that it sacrificed some historical accuracy in an attempt to glorify
