Lincoln’s assassination changed the course of Reconstruction by making his successor, Andrew Johnson, the next president of the United States. Andrew Johnson' plan was similar to Abraham Lincoln's plan, but their plans were different in some aspects, which changed the Reconstruction Era. For example, Lincoln and Johnson both wanted slaves to be free and not forced to work.
