Abraham Lincoln once said, “to care for him who shall have born the battle and for his widow and his orphan.” In this essay, I am going to be talking about Lincoln’s promise as well as the various ways in which we have kept his promise. Firstly, Abraham Lincoln made a promise to our future generations. This promise consisted of caring for veterans and their families. A veteran is someone who had previously served in the military. However, many veterans who return home have been injured in combat or have a disability. Some veterans also come home to poverty. However, there are many charities and thins that we have done to keep this promise alive. Secondly, there are many charities and organizations towards caring for veterans and their families. One charity is the Wounded Warriors Family Support. The Wounded Warriors Family Support is an organization that takes care of the families of men and women who have been injured or killed in combat. The Wounded Warriors Family Support is free of charge and grants a retreat in which families can reconnect with each other. Another charity is the Fisher House Foundation which is an organization that gives veterans and their families a place to stay while a family member is receiving treatment. The government/politics has also contributed towards caring for veterans and their families. In 2010, Barrack Obama and the Administration created Opening Doors. Opening Doors is a strategic plan to end homelessness as well as prevent it.
