Context:

This literacy assessment was done formally by using the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) method with a student, Traven, from my grade one practicum class. It is a standardized reading test used to determine a student’s instructional level in reading. It is administered to all students in Gr. 1-3 during a testing window in September and May so that teachers can track student progress.
Traven was at level 16 and worked very hard at concentrating on all classroom reading activities. Hence, I decided to choose a level 18 DRA benchmark book because it seemed like a good estimate for his reading assessment. This book is called “A Giant in the Forest” illustrated by Kellie Lewis. After getting instruction from my AT, I introduced the whole process to him. Then, I instructed him to take a “picture walk” through the text and read first three paragraphs to familiarize himself with the story. He was able to gather pertinent information and predicted quite nicely some of the next possible events. By considering his prediction and fewer miscues, the book seemed appropriate to me. I was very curious to assess him because of his enthusiasm and exciting attitude to reading the whole story.

It also incorporates indirect exposure to words that might be prominent to acquire vocabulary incidentally at home and at
