Literacy played a major role in Frederick Douglass life he knew that learning how to read was his best opportunity to advance himself from his situation. He feels he ought to have the same privilege the white kids his age knew concerning their age and other information. Since he had no regular teachers he converted all the white children he had met on the street as teachers. Also, He traded his bread for lessons, and at the age of twelve he read “The Columbian Orator” which led to more of hatred for being a slave.
