“A&P” John Updike Prompt 2 In John Updike’s “A&P”, he illustrates to the reader how a teenage boy will make stupid decisions based off of trying to impress a very attractive girl. The biggest theme one can take away from reading this short story is individual choice and the consequences that come along with that. In analyzing the roles of Lengel and Queenie, each character has a huge a huge role on what Sammy’s ultimate decision will be. With Lengel telling the girls that they are violating store policy by the the clothing that they were wearing while telling Sammy that quitting would be bad because the staff at A&P need him. Then Queenie enticing anyone and everyone who is staring at her, thus creating an imaginary chance that Sammy thinks he has. Some can see were there is a dilemma that Sammy is running into and that is “Do I quit my job and go after the girl or do I keep my job and acquire money for my future?”. Sammy is experiencing a transition from childhood to adult hood. At the start of the story, Sammy is a typical 19-year-old working at a grocery store. However, as he watches the reactions to the girls he is amused by the reactions but also defensive. In addition, he does not want to become someone that is working at a grocery store for the rest of his life (like Stoksie) but if he quits he is afraid that he may get a bad reputation that would disappoint his
