In Act 4 of The Crucible, John Proctor fights against Hathorne and Danforth because he is an innocent man who will be hanged because of false assertions made by the citizens of Salem. For example, Proctor says, “I can not mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man” (136). Proctor is stating that he has not interacted with the devil. Proctor wants everyone in Salem that he is an unimpeachable Christian man. In addition, Proctor says, “I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church!” (142). Proctor is saying that it is not necessary for him to be hanged publically. Proctor believes that god does not want his name mounted in vain because of his innocence.

For example, Rebecca and Elizabeth’s difficulties are the false accusations of them using witchcraft, but Elizabeth can not be hanged due to her being pregnant. Another one of Elizabeth’s difficulties is that her husband John Proctor is up for trial to be hanged. For example, Elizabeth says, “As you will, I would have it. I want you living John” (136). Elizabeth knows that these remarks are false and she wants Proctor to stay alive. Hale and Parris want the accused to confess because they do not want any more citizens of Salem to be hanged innocent.
