Edgar Allan Poe use the literacy device of setting to create a dark threatening tone in his short story “Tell Tale Heart” by using 3 of the 12 primary elements of setting. The 3 elements that Edgar Allan Poe used were Geography, Time of Day, and Mood and Atmosphere.

As mentioned in the claim, Edgar Allan Poe used 3 elements of setting to write “Tell Tale Heart”. One of those elements was mood and atmosphere which is characters and events are influenced by time. For example , In (pg.538,p.2) the narrator explains that for a whole week at midnight he would stalk the old man sleeping as he plotted to kill the man. Also, In (pg.538,p.3) the narrator explained that he used a dark lantern to help him stalk the old man sleeping. And lastly on (pg.538,p.10) the narrator explains that on the eighth night he was able to kill the old man in the old man’s pitch black bedroom. …show more content…
Which is during times of periods of days. For example, in (pg.538,p.5) the narrator explained that it took him an hour to place his whole head within the opened door so far that he could see the old man sleeping. Also, in (pg.538,p2) the narrator said that he would stalk the old man sleeping at midnight for a whole week. And, in (pg.541,p.2) the narrator explained that by the time he was done storing the old man’s corpse, it was 4:00am.

Lastly, the third element that Poe used was locale. Which is the country, state, region, city,town. For example , in (pg.538,p.2) the narrator explains that he created a chamber to place the old man’s corpse. Also, on (pg.542,p.2) the narrator explains that the murder took place in the old man’s bedroom. And in (pg.538. p.5) the narrator explains that the chamber was set to be under the wooden planks in the living
