Other researchers have a better understanding now of the biochemistry of naturally formed proteins in order to create better antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, biofuels, food crops and other natural products just because of this process.
B. As well that this now provides scientists with a new laboratory tool they can use just to purify and track proteins in living cells!
C. It took 10 years for the researchers in Michael Burkart’s laboratory for them to have a chemical probe attached to a certain location on the protein, along with selectively removing it.
Apparently this allows for them to be able to study the protein with many different functional attachments, as they may say.
D. Also, even in his own laboratory, Michael Burkart’s goal was to just understand more about the biochemical pathways of these fatty acid metabolisms and of other natural products biosynthesis.
E. The engineering of algae is a project of theirs that they are paying attention to in order for them to produce improved biofuels.
F. The chemical probe for this metabolic protein was using phosphodiesterase, an enzyme that was derived from the common bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
G. The repetition of this process, the examining of the molecular changes in the fatty acid with the nuclear magnetic spectroscopy (also known as NMR) during these different metabolic stages, the scientists were able to detail the biochemical pathway of the fatty acid metabolism in a way they had never been able to do before.
H. According to Burkart, with not having this could make very limited ways of studying the dynamics of these fundamental metabolic processes. Who knew?!
I. NMR was used to confirm that degrading or the altering of the protein in any way isn’t affected by attaching and chemically removing, stated by the UC San Diego chemists.
J. Anti-biotics, natural insecticides, and anti-cancer agents are shared by the metabolism of many natural products; this tool should have a wide application in the natural product chemistry labs with this new tool, claimed by Michael Burkart.
