Lizzie Borden was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on July 19, 1860. Her mother died when she was only two years old. Lizzie’s father, Andrew, remarried shortly after to a woman named Abby. Lizzie’s older sister, Emma, was ten years older than her. Emma fulfilled the role as Lizzie’s mother. The family lived in an old home downtown, with no gas lighting, hot water, or even a bathtub. Abby was quiet and often stayed in the home and had friends over. The Borden sisters and the relationship with their stepmother Abby was tense. At first, Abby attempted to become close with Lizzie and Emma, but the sisters resented her for trying to take the place of their mother. The sisters even chose to eat dinner separate from their father and stepmother. The sisters greeted Abby as "Mrs. Borden" and worried that Abby’s family sought to gain access to their father's wealth. Lizzie let no one stand in the way of her inheriting her father’s fortune.
