The Main Lobster Festival is the place to go if you enjoy lobster or want to experience a fun festival on the western side of Penobscot Bay. I found out this is the place to go if you want to experience anything and everything involving lobsters. They have lobster rolls, lobster turnovers, lobster sauté, lobster salad, lobster bisque, lobster ravioli, deep-fried lobster dumplings; along with lobster T-shirts, lobster bobble head dolls, inflatable lobster pool toys, and clamp-on lobster hats with big scarlet claws that wobble on springs. You name it and they have it, if it involves lobster of course. I couldn’t believe there was a lobster festival that attracted around 80,000 paid attendance. The article talks about “laws against feeding lobsters to inmates more than once a week because it was thought to be cruel and unusual, like making people eat rats.” Now days lobster is sought after and is very expensive. I couldn’t imagine lobster having such a low status. It made more sense when I learned lobster was so plentiful during this time. After large storms, the beaches would be full of dead, smelly lobsters. I think lobsters low status during the 1800s had a lot to do with the way they prepared the food as well. The article says they would cook the lobster dead, then preserve it to eat for later. I think lobster is much better cooked fresh and caught in the summertime when lobsters are hungry and active. I thought the author did a good job giving a lot of information on lobsters before he talked about the big debate among cooking lobsters.
