Many communities have considered joining and organizing a locavore movement. The locavore movement is a growing trend where people prefer to consume locally grown food for various reasons. With people considering this movement, they would like to know the affects it would have on the community and the issues associated with it. The locavore movement changes a community’s farmland, trade, quality of life and food, income, and overall health. By supporting the locavore movement, the community will promote “land development” (Source A). In result, the community will grow in farmland and production. When there are local farms “fruit and vegetables will travel shorter distances and are therefore likely to be closer to a maximum of nutrition” (Source B). This decreased travel distance time will have effects on the “water usage, fertilizer types, processing, and packaging” that occur during shipping (Source C). It also decreases the amount of chemical preservatives used on food. The locavore movement allows the people of the community to know which crops are in season and when to grow organic food due to crop rotation. In return, “locavores argue that buying local food supports an area’s farmers and strengthens the community” (Source C). This …show more content…
By eating locally it boosts the economy all around (Source A). Farmers and produce markets make money from trade, but by selling locally during the movement “$290 billion would still go to powerful agribusiness interests for growing corn, soybeans, and cotton.” (Source E). By making money locally, a community would save time because it is a “straightforward way to cut externalities” during trade. (Source F). This in result will save money for local companies and markets. People who are a part of this movement are willing to pay more for locally grown food which boosts the economy.
