Lois Mailou Jones was born November 3, 1905 in Boston, Massachusetts and died June 9, 1998. Lois Mailou Jones was an Artist during the time period of the Harlem Renaissance, her paintings dealt with African American Traditions. Jones grew up in Boston with her parents Thomas Vreeland Jones and Carolyn Dorinda Adam Jones. Jones Mother ran a beauty parlor and mad hats while her father was a building superintendent who went to night school and became the first African American to graduate from Suffolk Law school. Growing up Jones spent much of her time on Martha's Vineyard, at the age of three she was encouraged to begin drawing. Jones attended high school at Boston High School of Practical Arts. There she won annual scholarships to take classes at the Museum of Fine Arts after school and Saturdays. There Lois Jones worked with Grace Ripley a costume designer, to make costumes and masks for the theater. After Jones graduated from high school she extended her muse at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts. While Jones was there in the years 1923-1927 she was awarded the Susan Minot Lane scholarships in design each year. Her students exhibitions attracted Howard University in Washington D.C then was offered a teaching position. Jones went to teach at Howard University as a design instructor. In 1932 Jones completed one of her famous painting “Ascent of Ethiopia” it was a painting that represented the history of African American culture of Ethiopia to the Harlem Renaissance. Jones soon started studying various of cultures, at Columbia University. During this time Jones also met her soon to be husband, Louis Vergniaud Pierre-Noël a Haitian graphic
