Imagine for a moment, if you will, that you’re trapped in a dark room. There’s nothing in this room, except a heavy, overcasting darkness. You look around the room, and to your right you see a small beacon of light. Curiously, you begin to walk toward the light. You reach the source of the light and discover that the source of the light is a small window. As you gaze out of this window, you see what appears to be a group of friends having a conversation. You notice expressions of happiness and affection on their faces, and you feel a sudden yearning to feel the same. Logically, you try to make yourself seen. Robert often wrote letters to his sister describing how lonely he was, as well as his desperate need for a friend to provide him with companionship. Even though Robert was constantly surrounded by his crew members, he still felt as though he didn’t have a friend in the world. It’s quite ironic how we can be surrounded by people and still feel as though we’re completely alone. All Robert ever wanted was to be understood by another person, but isn’t that what we’re all truly searching for? Unfortunately for Robert, the one true friend that he ever found in the world died before his very eyes. Just before Victor’s death, Robert expressed his sentiments towards him in a most heartfelt way, “I have longed for a friend; I have sought one who would sympathize with and love me. Behold, on these desert seas I have found such a one, but I fear I have gained him only to know his value and lose him.” This quote perfectly embodies what Robert had felt his entire life, and the way he had felt in that current moment. Robert had finally found what he had been searching for his entire life, only to have it stripped away from him just as quickly as you found it. For his entire life Robert was trapped in his own dark room of loneliness, and the first glimmer of hope was extinguished just as soon as it was lit. Loneliness is something that even impacts highschoolers and people over the world. We, as humans, are inherently social creatures with a need for companionship. When we don’t have this need for companionship filled, we are left with an empty feeling inside. Loneliness, all too often leads to depression, which is the only thing worse than loneliness. When you’re depressed you’re constantly in that dark room, and you feel as though the darkness is closing in on you. Unfortunately, this darkness often leads to suicide. If people don’t know how to deal with loneliness and depression in a healthy manner then it can snowball into things that can be too much to handle. It seems like such a big problem, but it has such a simple solution. All these people seek is companionship, and a need to be cared for. A need for a companionship is precisely what Robert and the Monster were searching for as well. Unfortunately for either of them they were never able to fulfill this need, and even worse never found their way out of their dark
