It is estimated that there are 140 million world-wide orphans. This essay will be comparing two of them; Tree-ear from “A Single Shard”, and Ruckel, an orphan from the article “An Orphan’s Lonely Beginnings Reveal How Parents Shape A Child’s Brain.” Both of these children have poor living conditions with no biological relatives.

Tree-ear is a 12th century orphan who lives under a bridge with a parental figure of the name of Crane-man, in Ch’upl’o Korea. Ruckel is a 19th century orphan who lives in an orphanage in Romania. Contrasting things about these two are their locations and time periods. Ch’ulp’o, a village based off of Chulpo-ri, a real town in modern day Korea, is a sea-side town with thatched roofed houses that line the dirt streets;
