“Or should they begin the long hard walk- and hope they reached in time?” In the book, “A Long Walk To Water” two children, a boy named Salva and a girl named Nya in different time frames struggle daily in the country of Sudan. No matter what, they both never gave up during the brutal journey. Love, unity, and perseverance were three community values shown in ‘A Long Walk To Water”.

First, Salva and Nya needed love to survive. One example on page 40 is, “He clung to Uncle like a baby or a little boy, hanging onto his shirttail when he could, never letting uncle farther than an arm’s length away.’’ This example shows Salva needed love to survive because without Uncle’s motivation and love, Salva would have lost hope and eventually die in the desert. Another example on page 39 is, “ Her silence frightened Nya. Only two days earlier, Akeer had complained noisily and at length about the pains in her stomach.” This other example shows Nya needed love to survive owing to the fact that she worried about Akeer dying. To survive, Salva and Nya needed love.

Second, Salva and Nya needed unity to survive. One example on page 60 is, “There will be many other people in the camp. You will become friends with some of them- you will make kind a family there. They, too, will need people they can depend on.” This example

Love is needed to survive in the view of it feels good to know somebody loves you when you feel broken or depressed. Unity is also needed to survive since a modern society would join together if a member or several members are in a time of need, everyone or most people would be there for them. But, most importantly, perseverance is needed to survive whereas a modern society would stick together to overcome challenges or difficult times.
