In general, when looking for accurate and reliable sources on the internet, there are a couple of things to look out for and to look for. Some of the most important things for a reliable source are author, date of publishment, presence of bias, and domain. If a site has an author and the author shows fairly no bias, then chances are the source is reliable. It’s also important for the source to be recent and from a dependable domain because information constantly changes and domains like .org and .edu are often more reliable than the .com domains that anyone can register. Often if a source has all of these factors then it is fairly authentic and has good information, so when looking for sources one should always look for these things.

When my partner and I were looking for sources our first hurdle was how to phrase our search words in order to get the most accurate and fulfilling results. We wanted to get some information on domestic abuse, but we also wanted more specific research on how the abuse affects the families. Some example of phrases we used were “domestic abuse” “domestic abuse affects on families” and “abuse affect on children”. Once we had a pool of websites to choose from, the first thing I did was look at the names of the websites and the domain registration and select the ones that looked the most trustworthy.

I also looked for websites that were national websites, meaning they had access to information some other places don’t and could give more information. Authors for the articles or pages were often hard to find, but some websites offered citations to websites or places where they got their information, which was helpful as well.
