In class we watched two films and read a novel called Lord of the Flies. The novel was originally written by William Golding in the year 1954. The main characters that hold an importance in all three versions of Lord of the Flies are Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and Simon. Out of all of these characters Ralph is the main protagonist with Piggy supporting him all the way until his death by the hands of Jack and his gang. Jack is the antagonist in all three versions of Lord of the Flies who symbolizes turmoil. Jack has the ability to be part of a gang of uncivilized savages who destroy everything all because there are no grownups around. In the beginning of the novel Piggy meets Ralph. Piggy tells Ralph that “My auntie told me not to run”. His …show more content…
The shell is a shell that is a direct symbolization of power and order as opposed to savagery and turmoil. The shell shows through the presence of Ralph that the children still have a small link to the civilized world that they came from. Eventually, the conch shell is broken throughout all of the ruckus and the symbol is destroyed. The ability to keep the link to civilization is gone and the children ignore Ralph’s idea of maintaining the signal fire.

The final frames of the two films are similar to the book but, they do have some slight differences. The main differences are between the conversations with the naval officers and the children. The children in the 1963 film were given a slight expression of disappointment on becoming the savages that they were while they had their tenure on the island. One of the kids who had the name of Percival could not remember his name because of the insanity on the island.

To come to a conclusion, Lord of the Flies is a mediocre novel that was great for its time period. The writing was written fairly decent but, there are many flaws in all three adaptations of Lord of the Flies. Some scenes were missing from the films that were in the novel and unnecessay scenes were in the film that do not have a direct impact on how the novel was originally
