In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the conch, and the fire come to social order, respect and power. It is in use by jack mainly. Ralph and Piggy the ones to discover the conch shell, come across it on the beach and benefit from it by using it to call the other boys to form a small society on the island, which represents social order. When the boys hold meetings around the campfire, only the speaker holding the conch may speak to the crowd or they may not speak. The speaker with the conch is to be heard and respected while speaking. Jack and Ralph have a hard time with this because they both want the power and respect that the conch represents. The conch represents power in the beginning of the book on page 22 when the children vote for Ralph to be the leader of the group. ‘“Him with the shell." "Ralph! Ralph!" "Let him be chief with the trumpet thing." The conch representing power and leadership. In this novel the conch plays an important role, holding everyone together and in order. It is the only way everything is organized to have meetings and votes. The conch is the main tool that is respected. On the island, there are no adults to keep everything in order. The fire is mentioned by Ralph in chapter three when he mentions, they would need the fire to be rescued off the island. It is also a form of communication to the outside to catch someone’s attention to help rescue the kids off the island. Ralph says "If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” Jack and Ralph created the fire by using Piggy’s glasses which Piggy did not agree with because he wasn’t happy about the way it was being used but at the moment it was the only possible way to start the fire in order for someone to come to their rescue
