In Lord of The Flies, the fire symbolizes their hope in being rescued. In the novel Golding writes, "So we must make smoke on the top of the mountain. We must make fire" (38). This quote illustrates the boys' determination along with their desire for salvation. As the novel progresses, their priority for the fire decreases.
