There are different themes and topics throughout the book and the author explains each one of them in different ways as the story progresses. For example, one of the main themes in the book deals with civilization and how rules and being civilised keep people from becoming savage. Throughout the story the characters become more and more savage, partly because they live on a deserted island with very little rules or adults to enforce the rules. As well, any rules that are present are difficult to enforce because the boys do not respect their chosen leader, Ralph. The conch shell is the main symbol of leadership and power but even that starts to lose its effect and the boys start to ignore its power. When the shell is first found, Piggy explains that it is “A Conch he called it. He used to blow it and then his mum would come. It's ever so valuable.” (16). …show more content…
“By the time Ralph finished blowing the conch the platform was crowded.” (35). Ralph shows leadership in the group, both because he looks and acts like a leader, but also because he has claimed the conch and has used it to gather the boys together. Throughout the course of the story, these symbols have less effect on the group of boys as they are less influenced by civilization and rules and are more influenced by the beast or savageness within themselves, which is led in part by Jack. “Mutinously the boys fell silent or muttering. Jack led the way down the rock and across the bridge.”
