Art connected with the Renaissance era, such as sculptures, decorative art and paintings came to light in the late fourteenth century in Italy. The Renaissance reached its heights in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Lorenzo Ghiberti were considered masters of Italian art. Renaissance art expressed classical Greco-Roman traditions. “Renaissance art sought to capture the experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world.” (history.com). Portraying life-like human forms with believable expressions and clothing and with proportions to scale was how Renaissance artists kept the spirit of humanism. New techniques were developed in order to have paintings with a life-like quality and three-dimensional qualities. The artists also studied animal anatomy as well as human anatomy in order to under the subjects better. A very important sculptor of the early Renaissance was Lorenzo Ghiberti. Lorenzo Ghiberti was born in the year 1378, in Pelgao, Italy. It is unknown as to the exact month and day Ghiberti was born. Pelgao, Italy is a small town near Florence, Italy. Ghiberti’ first book pertained to the history of art in ancient times. In his first book, Ghiberti reveals “his belief that the inseparability of practice and theory is responsible for the excellence of ancient art” (Britannica.com). His second book, pertains to art of the immediate past. Ghiberti expresses his respect and admiration for Sienese painters and a goldsmith by the name of Gusmin.
